A day of the work
You never meet them. Here is what they did.
Eight jobs, one day, in the order they happened. No status codes and no jargon: if a line here needs explaining, it is written wrong.
One representative day, not a live stream. These are real things the system does, written out as a single day so they read in order. The live version reads from the signed log itself, and it is being built.

Someone asked for a way to send quotes without retyping the same numbers. Before anything got built, I wrote down what it has to do, who uses it, and what would count as finished. Nine lines. Everything after this is checked against them.
The plan comes first so there is something to be wrong against.

I put the plan to four rival systems, built by four different companies. Three said build it. One said the pricing rule was ambiguous and refused. So it did not get built. The question went back and came out clearer.
One of them can be confidently wrong. Four competitors rarely agree on the same mistake.

Laid out the screen before a line of it existed. One number in, one number out, nothing else on the page. The person using this is quoting a job on a phone in someone's driveway, not sitting at a desk.

Built it, and signed the change. The signature is part of a chain, so if anyone alters an old entry every entry after it stops matching. Nobody can quietly rewrite what happened, including me.
That is what makes the log worth handing to an auditor.

Wrote down what this business calls things. Their word for a job is not the same as the last customer's word for a job. Tomorrow I will still know that, and in eighteen months I will still know it.

Found a rounding error on totals over ten thousand. Nobody reported it and nobody asked me to look. I fixed it, checked the fix against the plan from this morning, and wrote down what caused it so it cannot come back the same way.
Nobody has to spot the problem first.

Checked who can see what. The office manager can send quotes. The apprentice cannot see margins. Nobody outside the company can see anything. Then I wrote down that I checked, and when.

Put it on the internet at its own address. No server to rent, nothing to install, nothing to keep patched on a Sunday. It is yours, and if you leave you take it with you.

Overnight, a supplier changed the format of their price list without telling anyone. The tool would have started reading the wrong column by Thursday. Adjusted, tested, logged. There was nothing to report in the morning because there was nothing left to fix.
Nights and weekends. No standup.
